Casino gambling is colourful and dramatic and theatrical – Steve Wynn

Human nature has proven that we love chasing dreams and goals. We crave excitement and the rush of adrenaline. Perhaps this is why, all through history, in almost every culture across the world, “games of chance” have found its way into the hearts of risk-takers. From ancient Egypt to China to Rome to our modern 21st century online casino, the past and the present of casino gaming is captivating and vibrant.

The Little House of Gambling

Casino translates into little house in Italian. During it’s origins this was directly related to a small pavilion that was built on the premises of a rather large ad impressive villa. The house was known for its unique parties that would always have an abundance of music, dancing, socializing and gambling. With time, the gambling became the main feature at the parties and the little house went big.

The very first modern casino was opened in Monaco in 1861. This continues to be in business up to date. The gambling with real money in play was legalized in the UK in 1960, even though the British would still continue to travel to Europe in order to enjoy the feel of casinos there. The US’s legal system had an on again off again relationship with gambling for centuries until 1931 when Nevada went legal with it. This move directly brought about the establishment of Las Vegas, the city of casinos.

The Little House of Gambling, had spurred a global movement.
It had given birth to and spread the thrill of casino gaming across the globe.

Meanwhile in Asia…

When the Portuguese first made gambling legal in the mid of the 19th century, the only Asian gambling games like Fan Tan and Pai Gow had been played over and over for many years. In 1962, a gaming syndicate with personnel from Macau and Hong Kong known as the STDM acquired monopoly rights to Macau’s gambling scene. They were the pioneers in introducing the Western gambling games to Asia.

Today, according to Sheldon Adelson, the American gambling magnate and owner of Las Vegas Sands Corporation “ The Las Vegas of the Far East” is what describes Macau best.

Asia certainly has come a long way now with countries like China and Sri Lanka too, joining the gambling tradition.

I want people to understand, gambling is not a bad thing if you do it within the framework of what it’s meant to be, which is fun and entertaining – Michael Jordan
